Browse our frequently asked questions section for quick answers to a wide range of questions.

How do you measure your gouges?

Our gouges are measured by the outside diameter of the tool. For instance, our 5/8" bowl gouge has an outside diameter of 5/8". If you are accustomed to measuring your tool based on the flute, please feel free to give us a call or send us an email to ensure you're ordering the appropriate size gouge.

What is a "u-shaped" bowl gouge?

Our 5/8" u-shaped bowl gouge, also known as a 'bottom-feeder', has a 60º grind, while our 5/8" bowl gouge has a 50º grind. The tools have slightly different flute shapes as well. Our 5/8" u-shaped bowl gouge is specifically designed for removing stock from the bottom of the bowl. Our 5/8" bowl gouge is a versatile tool and can be used to turn your bowl from start to finish.

Can I purchase just the tool bit?

Absolutely! At the bottom of each product page you'll notice specifications, including tool diameter. Right above the 'Add to cart' and 'quantity' tabs you'll notice a drop down menu, you can select 'unhandled'. Or just give us a call and we will serve you over the phone!

Can you put a custom grind on the tool I purchased?

Yes! Reach out to us and we'd be happy to accommodate a wide veriety of custom grinds.

Where are your tools made?

Every tool is designed, built, sharpened and inspected in our Seattle factory. (Yes, we do get lots of rain up here! Maybe that's why we like spending so much time in our wood shop...)

How do I sharpen my tool?

For sharpening questions, please give us a call at (206)878-7672. Our sharpening master, Paul, is happy to help.

We also have videos and a quick sharpening guide right here: https://carterandsontoolworks.com/pages/woodturning-resources.

Can you put a custom grind on the tool I purchased?

Unfortunately, at this time we are unable to accommodate custom grinds. We certainly understand that different turners prefer different grinds, and you're more than welcome to adjust the profile of your tools to your preference!

How do I keep my handles in top shape?

Aluminum is a sturdy material and will retain it's beautiful finish through years of constant use. If you would like to add a little extra shine, we suggest an all-purpose liquid cleaner applied with a paper towel.

Can I use 1 handle for many different tools?

Yes, our tools are completely interchangeable.

Step 1: Order a bit and handle set or simply your desired length of 3/4” diameter handle.

Step 2: Add to your collection by purchasing tool bits and corresponding adapters.

Step 3: Start making wood chips with easily interchangeable tools!

Three sizes of adapters, 5/8”, 1/2” and 3/8” fit either length of our 3/4” diameter handle. Start with our signature 16” x 3/4” or 12” x 3/4” handle then add tools and corresponding adapters. One handle - every tool.

How quickly will my tools ship?

We want you to start enjoying your tool as quickly as possible! All tools ship via USPS Priority 2-day mail. As soon as your tools ship you will receive an email notification and a tracking number.

In the event that your tool is backordered, we will let you know the approximate shipping date immediately.

Can I ship with another carrier?

Give us a call or send us an email if you would like to ship with UPS, FedEx, or another carrier. We are happy to help.

What are your hours?

We are available Monday - Saturday from 7am through 7pm. If we are unable to make it to the phone, please leave a message and we will be in touch shortly.

Can I come visit your factory?

Unfortunately our insurance restricts us from offering factory tours at this time. We would love to meet you at one of our upcoming symposium events, please visit our social media pages for information on our upcoming events.

What is your return policy?

Returns are hassle free. Give us a call or send us an email and we'll provide you with a complete refund.

What is a "Lifetime Guarantee?"

We're so confident in our quality tools, we offer a 100% lifetime guarantee. If you are not satisfied with your tool at any point, give us a call and we'll offer you a replacement or full refund.
