Mike’s aptly named “wood beater” is vibration dampening and designed to efficiently turn large pieces.

What makes a 5-star wood beater?

  • 3/4” parabolic bowl gouge
  • Shipped sharp with the grind found at Mahoney’s lathe (easily duplicated using a Wolverine jig)
  • Polished flute for efficient chip-flow and a razor edge
  • Superior M42 high speed steel ensures less grinding & cleaner cuts at the lathe
  • Put comfort and control first with an aluminum handle
  • Completely interchangeable handle system
  • 100% American manufacturing backed by a lifetime guarantee & hassle-free returns

The Specs

  • Blade measures 3/4” outside diameter x 13” overall
  • Parabolic flute, ground at 40º
  • 3/4” tang diameter
  • 16” or 22” x 3/4” handle (no adapter)

M42 makes the cut

It’s no wonder M42 high speed steel is favored across industries. A distinct cobalt additive bumps M42’s red hardness off the charts for impressive wear resistance. And M42’s unique structure produces a finer, sharper edge.

For you, M42 means less time grinding and cleaner cuts at the lathe. Carter & Son was founded because we realized many tools are machined from subpar steel, leaving us (and you!) making far too many trips to the grinder. M42 is the optimal steel for turning wood. It holds a long-lasting razor edge and is quickly sharpened on a conventional grinder.

Put comfort & control 1st

Carter & Son handles offer comfort and control at your lathe. Aluminum is the perfect weight for a balanced feel. And the comfortable shape fits your hand. Tight tolerances achieved in our factory mean your tool and adapter fit snuggly, reducing vibration. Interchangeability is possible using our aluminum adapters.

Very satisfied. Had to put a paper cup over the gouge because the little microns in the air were screaming as they were being blown around the shop. Good tool very pleased.

    Mike Mahoney "Wood Beater" Review

As with all Carter and Son Toolworks products, the finish on the tool is superb. But beyond that, the 5/8" Gouge (3/4" diameter) performs extremely well. The extra 1/8" of thickness in diameter (from a 5/8" diameter gouge) makes a huge difference in the vibration felt from the tool. If you start with unbalanced wood, and this tool is very helpful in making a blank round and balanced, and in initial shaping. And of course, it holds an edge much longer than other brands of gouges that I own.

Low profile Roughing Gouge/Shear Scraping Gouge/Wood Beater Gouge

Since the Shear Scraping Gouge and the Woodbeater Gouge are the SECOND ones I've purchased from you, it is safe to assume I LOVE these tools!!! I am extremely impressed with the Low Profile Roughing Gouge as it gives me much more flexibility to make specific cuts that in the past I could only make with a bowl gouge. I can pretty much rough out the entire outside of a very intricate vase or bowl with your new Low Profile Gouge. Like ALL your turning tools, the M42 and your temperature treatments make these the longest sharp cutting edge turning tools I own... You have a customer for life! Respectfully, Ken McCloud

    Review on 3/4 Bowl Gouge

I just purchased a 5/8 inch (3/4 dia) bowl gouge. The fit and finish of the tool is astounding. Carter and Sons accidentally added 30 seconds to my sharpening time; every time the tool is pulled out, a satisfying pop is heard. I stop and pull the tool out repeatedly just so I can hear that pop. The gouge's edge retention is by far the best. I can bury my ankles in shaving before stopping to sharpen. I will buy tools from no one else now.

Awesome tools & equally great customer service

By far the best quality tools I now own 6 of their tools and plan to purchase more as the need arises.
Very happy and loyal customer. They earned my loyalty with the highest quality tools they produce and wold class customer service.

Thank you for your review, Don! I am so glad to hear you are enjoying the tools - it is our pleasure to serve you. Give us a call anytime - and happy turning!
