M42 makes the cut

It’s no wonder M42 high speed steel is favored across industries. A distinct cobalt additive bumps M42’s red hardness off the charts for impressive wear resistance. And M42’s unique structure produces a finer, sharper edge.

For you, M42 means less time grinding and cleaner cuts at the lathe. Carter & Son was founded because we realized many tools are machined from subpar steel, leaving us (and you!) making far too many trips to the grinder. M42 is the optimal steel for turning wood. It holds a long-lasting razor edge and is quickly sharpened on a conventional grinder.

Put comfort & control 1st

Carter & Son handles offer comfort and control at your lathe. Aluminum is the perfect weight for a balanced feel. And the comfortable shape fits your hand. Tight tolerances achieved in our factory mean your tool and adapter fit snuggly, reducing vibration. Interchangeability is possible using our aluminum adapters.

How This Tool Is Built

Vanquish vibration, say adios to constant resharpening, and let wispy shavings fly. Delivering superior performance at your lathe is what drives our manufacturing. Keep reading to step into our factory and discover the rigorous process that makes every tool unequalled.

40 years in the making

M42 high speed steel has frequented our factory for 40 years and was a clear choice for the tools. You'll grind less - a cobalt additive bumps M42’s red hardness off the charts for impressive wear resistance. And cuts will be cleaner - the steel's unique structure produces a finer, sharper edge. M42 is a win-win, less grinding and smooth cuts.

Our M42 starts as solid stock and is precision machined (not formed) with a unique round tang. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. First, let's talk about those good-looking handles.

They don't just look great, our patented aluminum design achieves balance and maneuverability. Each handle is bored out to a comfortable weight, and lead shot can be added as you desire.

Round tang (& other manufacturing marvels)

Our manufacturing process is rigorous and extensive, but glance at that tool to the left. Every inch is built for superior performance at your lathe.

A vibration-demolishing round tang with a diameter so precise you'll here a 'pop' when you pull it out of the handle. And flutes meticulously polished for speedy chip flow and a sharper edge. Sharpened and hand-inspected before arriving at your shop.

Our manufacturing is comprehensive. And when you take your tool to the lathe, you'll feel the workmanship.

Mind Blown away...and so was the wood!!

I received my pieces and immediately went to my lathe for a test run...straight out of the package razor sharp and I tell what...the cuts I made with my tools were more than acceptable finishing cuts and would require absolutely no sanding what so ever!! Great Great Products and can’t wait to purchase more!!

Superior Craftsmanship

I am new to turning. I have purchased 3 different brands of tools for turning ink pens: Wood River, Robert Sorby, and Carter & Son. Honestly, the Wood River are unimpressive and barely a step up from imported junk. The Robert Sorby are nice. I like them. Great craftsmanship. They are a very good tool. But, the Carter & Son tools are in a class all by themselves. The aluminum handles are wonderful. I love the weight and feel of the aluminum. Oh yes, the Carter & Son tools come very sharp. I've yet to touch up the edge on my Carter & Son spindle gouge. Although it doesn't have anything to do with the performance of the tool, the Carter & Son tools possess a nontraditional attractive appearance. I am proud of my ownership. Thank you Carter & Son.

Great Turning Tools

These tools are a pleasure to hold. They are sharp, as advertised. I find them to be very stable and comfortable to hold. I attribute the stability to the weight of the well designed handle which balances the tool nicely. It feels so good in the hand. The sharpness of the cutting edge of the tool is the best that I have used ‘out of the box’. I will be adding more Carter & Son tools in the near future.

Second set

I splurged about 6-7 months ago and purchased the 5/8 bowl gouge and scraper set... this time I ordered the pen set.. although I consider myself nothing more than a mere beginner, I have to say the tools make learning much easier. They stay very sharp and sharpening them is very easy. Yes you can find far cheaper tools (which I have purchased), but if it is within your means I would highly recommend buying one, maybe your "go to" tool to start. You will not regret it! Great tools!
