A razor edge is imperative for turning wood. Many woodturning tools are machined from subpar steel. After 40 years of manufacturing experience, we know M42 high speed steel is the optimal steel for turning wood. It hones to a fine, sharp edge and retains that edge due to a 10% content of cobalt.

Your handle connects you to your work, we’ve carefully designed the weight and curvature of our signature handles for comfort, control, and chatter reduction. Each handle has set screws to secure your tool and knurling for grip. Our innovative handles are made in our own factory and are patented.

All the design work, machining, inspection and shipping of this tool is done in our Seattle factory. As a family business dedicated to engineering ingenuity, precision workmanship and woodturning we ensure that every tool you receive is perfect. Happy turning!

    • Blade measures: 1/2" diameter x 12" overall
    • Diameter: 1/2"        Handle: 12" x 3/4" with 1/2" adapter

    How This Tool Is Built

Vanquish vibration, say adios to constant resharpening, and let wispy shavings fly. Delivering superior performance at your lathe is what drives our manufacturing. Keep reading to step into our factory and discover the rigorous process that makes every tool unequalled.

    40 years in the making

M42 high speed steel has frequented our factory for 40 years and was a clear choice for the tools. You'll grind less - a cobalt additive bumps M42’s red hardness off the charts for impressive wear resistance. And cuts will be cleaner - the steel's unique structure produces a finer, sharper edge. M42 is a win-win, less grinding and smooth cuts.

Our M42 starts as solid stock and is precision machined (not formed) with a unique round tang. But we're getting ahead of ourselves. First, let's talk about those good-looking handles.

They don't just look great, our patented aluminum design achieves balance and maneuverability. Each handle is bored out to a comfortable weight, and lead shot can be added as you desire.

Round tang (& other manufacturing marvels)

Our manufacturing process is rigorous and extensive, but glance at that tool to the left. Every inch is built for superior performance at your lathe.

A vibration-demolishing round tang with a diameter so precise you'll here a 'pop' when you pull it out of the handle. And flutes meticulously polished for speedy chip flow and a sharper edge. Sharpened and hand-inspected before arriving at your shop.

Our manufacturing is comprehensive. And when you take your tool to the lathe, you'll feel the workmanship.

    Double Ended Gouge

I have not had alot of time to use the new Double ended gouge, What I have experienced from the whole process of ordering, shipping and product receipt has been very plesant. Everything was received as stated and was extreemely well made. Excellent craftsmanship. I have been using carbide tools which have been working very well, but i wanted to have some bowl gouges to use also. The little bit I have used this gouge has left me very impressed. The videos were very helpful with the transition from carbide to this gouge. A bit of a learning curve but not bad when you have good instruction.

    First time use

This is my first purchase of Carter and Sons tools. I can't say enough about them. They are very sharp right out of the package saving me time preparing for use. The double ended gouge is great with two distinct profiles allowing me to have two tools in one. The tool cuts through wood like butter leaving a nice surface behind. I absolutely love this tool. I plan on replacing all of my tools with Carter and Sons tools.

    Double Ended Gouge

    5 STARS

I literally have over 100 turning tools--I know OCD for sure--but I must say I think I have finally found my stopping point--these Carter and Sons tools are just flat awesome in all respects--these and Stuart Batty tools are the peak of all the tools I have tried. there's a place for Carbide (Easy Wood Tools) but for regular tools which are the main tools you need, don't look anywhere other than at Carter tools--simply the best!!
