1-¼” Spindle Roughing Gouge – Premium M42 HSS Woodturning Tool

A high-quality spindle roughing gouge (SRG) is the workhorse of woodturning, ideal for shaping square blanks into smooth, rounded spindles. Designed for both beginners and experienced turners, our 1-¼” roughing gouge provides unmatched control, strength, and long-lasting sharpness. Handcrafted in Seattle, this tool is a staple in any woodworking or wood lathe turning setup.

Why Our Roughing Gouge Stands Out

  • Wide U-Shaped Flute: Engineered for efficient chip flow, making roughing out fast and clean.

  • Heavy-Duty Round Tang: Delivers superior strength and stability under load compared to flat tangs, ensuring safe, long-term use.

  • M42 High Speed Steel: With 10% cobalt, this HSS blade holds a razor-sharp cutting edge longer than standard gouges, requiring less sharpening at the grinder.

  • Precision Ground Bevel: Optimized for smooth bevel riding and controlled cutting on a tool rest—perfect for spindle turning, chair legs, table spindles, and other large spindlework.

  • Comfortable Aluminum Handle: Interchangeable, lightweight, and balanced for excellent hand feel during extended turning sessions.

  • Ready to Turn: Ships sharp and ready to use straight from our factory.

    How This Tool Is Built

We start with the sharpest edge, and we don't stop there. Vanquish vibration, say adios to constant resharpening, and let wispy shavings fly. Delivering superior performance at your lathe drives our manufacturing.

We’ve worked with M42 high speed steel for 4 decades, and it’s uniquely suited to woodturning. You’ll grind less - a cobalt additive provides unparalleled edge holding. And the steel produces a finer, sharper edge for clean cuts. M42 is a win-win: less grinding and smoother cuts.

Our carefully sourced M42 starts as solid stock and is precision machined (not formed) with a unique round tang for unmatched strength. Every gouge sports a distinctive flute polish. This boosts the razor edge and provides efficient chip flow. Learn more about M42 HSS here.

Rigorous and detailed sums up our manufacturing. Each tool’s vibration-demolishing round tang has a diameter so precise you’ll hear a ‘pop’ when you pull it out of the handle. And every tool leaves our factory razor sharp and backed by a 100% lifetime guarantee. Built to last!

Rest assured our aluminum handles feel as great as they look. Perfectly weighted for balance and maneuverability, and designed to fit your hand. You’ll forget the handle is even there, in the best way possible. Two set screws secure your tool into the handle and allow removal for sharpening.

From flute polish to handle knurling, we’re not cutting corners. Whether you’re just starting out, or have been turning for decades, it’s an honor to serve you with quality tools. Learn more about our story here

    Should be an inch longer

Don't get me wrong, I really do like Carter and Son tools, but this one not so much. It needs to be an inch longer in design. I am having trouble using it on my Oneway banjo. The neck of my tool handle will occasionally hit the handle on the tool rest locking handle. I think the roughing gouge needs to be one inch longer in length.

    Game changer

The best steel. The best craftsmanship. Absolutely a game changer for me. Don't know how it did without it. Will always have this tool.

Great 1 1/4" spindle roughing gouge

Recently broke down and purchased a larger spindle roughing gouge. The Carter and Sons 1 1/4" gouge did not disappoint. It's size and weight makes such a difference when rouging both small and larger pieces. It cuts so smoothly. Very pleased with the purchase.

    Great Tools

The substance and quality of Carter and Sons turning tools is unbelievably great. They’re on the heavy side if you use their aluminum handles but I like the weight. I think it’s because of their weight that they turn so smoothly. Love, love them.

    Heavy-duty tools...👍 I recommend it 100%!

It's a very sturdy tool with a solid shank, which provides stability and safety, and reduces fiber damage when it comes into contact with the wood. The most outstanding features are the tool's sharpness and excellent finish. I'm very happy with this beautiful tool; for me, it's the best!
