You've heard the buzz about Cubic Boron Nitride, aka CBN, wheels. But do they really live up to the popularity? We've been using them regularly for years now, and have compiled our favorite benefits, and a few tips if you decide to invest in one yourself.
The Benefits
Let's start with the big one - compared with standard white aluminum oxide, CBN hones a very fine edge. You'll be blown away by a sharper tool, and a longer-lasting edge to boot.
Another time-saver, CBN wheels won't shrink in diameter and don't need to be trued or cleaned (provided you're grinding hardened steel). CBN also won't cause your tools to overheat as quickly, allowing you to remove stock at a faster pace.
Tips & Grits
We'd suggest investing in an 80-120 grit wheel for reshaping your tools, and a 220 or higher for resharpening. (A higher grit wheel heats up faster, but also creates a finer edge.)
For first time users, CBN wheels may feel aggressive, especially until they're "broken in". Don't apply a great deal of pressure, use a light touch and let the weight of the tool do the work. A slow running grinder may be less intimidating for those still fine tuning their skills, as it won't remove stock as quickly. Regardless, when you first turn on the machine, give it a few minutes to get up to speed. CBN wheels are rather heavy, and it may take several seconds for the grinder to really get going.
