    How This Tool Is Built

We start with the sharpest edge, and we don't stop there. Vanquish vibration, say adios to constant resharpening, and let wispy shavings fly. Delivering superior performance at your lathe drives our manufacturing.

We’ve worked with M42 high speed steel for 4 decades, and it’s uniquely suited to woodturning. You’ll grind less - a cobalt additive provides unparalleled edge holding. And the steel produces a finer, sharper edge for clean cuts. M42 is a win-win: less grinding and smoother cuts.

Our carefully sourced M42 starts as solid stock and is precision machined (not formed) with a unique round tang for unmatched strength. Every gouge sports a distinctive flute polish. This boosts the razor edge and provides efficient chip flow. Learn more about M42 HSS here.

Rigorous and detailed sums up our manufacturing. Each tool’s vibration-demolishing round tang has a diameter so precise you’ll hear a ‘pop’ when you pull it out of the handle. And every tool leaves our factory razor sharp and backed by a 100% lifetime guarantee. Built to last!

Rest assured our aluminum handles feel as great as they look. Perfectly weighted for balance and maneuverability, and designed to fit your hand. You’ll forget the handle is even there, in the best way possible. Two set screws secure your tool into the handle and allow removal for sharpening.

From flute polish to handle knurling, we’re not cutting corners. Whether you’re just starting out, or have been turning for decades, it’s an honor to serve you with quality tools. Learn more about our story here

Fabulous Heavy (no vibration) Carter & Son Tool

Built and arrived sharpened to the standard (no, not standard… “over the top”) quality Carter & Son specs. Love this heavy tool, used for “hogging” out bowls reducing vibration, allowing for extra reach, and usable directly out of the mailing sleeve (although I unnecessarily touch up the sharpening with a 360 grit CBN wheel). My ONLY complaint/suggestion is Carter & Son need to provide sharpening instructions with other than the Wolverine System…. I have both the Sorby Pro-Edge and the Kodiak Sharpening systems… neither of which use the same settings as the Wolverine. I can figure it out with trial and error but at this point I would think they would have “figured it out” and provided it. ($2k in buying 2 machines and 2 days setting up/using the machines to record the additional sharpening guidance). Not a criticism as much as an enhancement suggestion. And this doesn’t detract from my opinion that the Carter & Son lathe tools are THE BEST in the business (and I have lathe tools from everyone: Sorby (of course), Thompson, Clewes, Crowne, Battey, etc.) All are good, some are great, but they just don’t have that “feel”; the weight, the ability to change tools among different but similar GREAT feeling handles that Carter & Son provide. My only other “suggestion” is to team up with Jimmy Clewes and provide a quick release fitting for their handles allowing a tool-less removal of the cutter from the handle for sharpening. Handles, at sharpening time, only get in the way. Two set screws aren’t difficult; but the Jimmy Clewes’ tool-less quick release is even better.

    Glad I got it!

Great initial bowl gouge starting project. It removes a lot of wood effortlessly and gets me rough shape in less time than it used to when using my 5/8 gouge. I use with 20” handle and mostly on initial roughing between spindles and it makes big ribbons, is comfortable and easy to operate. I really like it and am glad I got it!

    Astounding Tool

I ordered the 3/4" bowl gouge w/ the 20" handle and the 3/8" bowl gouge, both w/ the swept back grind. It's been a week since I got them but just used the 3/4" today on a cherry & spalted ambrosia maple bowl I glued up. It did a fine job. I have also ordered the pen makers set with a 16" handle and a 5/8" bowl gouge, all with the standard grind. I believe that once everything arrives I'll have an excellent set of lathe tools to work with. I'm considering getting the 10" or 12" handle also. Maybe next month. I'm looking forward to them arriving as I have projects in line for them also. This tool and the steel is marvelous to use. The handle is a bit longer than what I'm used to but I'll get used to it I'm sure. They are well crafted and the best part is they are made here in the USA. You can't beat that. Everyone at Carter and Son is pleasant and knowledgeable to speak with and work with in helping make decisions as to what I wanted. From now on, they are definitely my "go to" for lathe tools.

    Craftsmanship

From the packaging all the way down to the engraving on the tool this thing is unreal. Incredible think I could probably shave my face with this thing if I had too. Almost so good looking you don’t w at to use it.
